While poking around some tracks downtown, we gained access to a part of the tunnel that was partitioned off in the late 1990s in order to keep the homeless out. Within this area, we found a mysterious bit of graffiti – a chalk outline of a tombstone on a tunnel wall, labeled ” RIP WK 1959″.

Who was WK? Was he a worker that died right here in this tunnel?

Apparently over 230 subway workers are known to have died on the job since 1946. At some of the spots they died, there are these tributary chalk notations on the walls. This one is the oldest I’ve come across.

   If this is where I think it is (think movies, in between two tracks that were once used for passenger service) then you’re a beast for getting in there.
