The Humidor

There is one general rule about the climate of the subway system that remains almost uniformly true: When it’s hot outside, it is at least 10 degrees hotter underground.

The underground climate is an unusual dry heat for this city. The air is almost exclusively very dry, due to all of the ever present 600 volt exposed third rail. The tunnel lighting also helps dry out the air.

However, the photos on this page are of one of those odd spots that is sufficiently deep enough underground and far enough above the tracks to be damp. Leaking water compounds the situation.

This place was so humid, it’s probably the only subway tunnel my camera lens has ever fogged up in.

That didn’t stop me from shooting the hell out of it though…

The nearby Emergency Exit proved to have only a few tags, but those that were present represent some of NYC’s best writers.
