NYCHA Auto Graveyard: State Sponsored Blight

Published on: April 4th, 2016 | Last updated: April 1, 2016 Written by:

For one NYC housing project, it’s the 1970 & 80s all over again.

Back in the day, it wasn’t all that uncommon to find abandoned cars even in ‘nice’ neighborhoods. Looted or junk cars would simply be dumped curbside, or ditched in the nearest ghetto or waterway. These days ended as a result of higher scrap values, anti-theft devices, and an overall drop in crime.

However, at the Queensbridge houses in Long Island City, there is currently an entire parking lot full of abandoned vehicles.

All of these vehicles belong to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), which runs NYC’s ‘Housing Projects’. Many are labeled for the NYCHA housing projects they were assigned, representing an all-city view of their automotive fleet. Most of these vehicles have clear and obvious signs of damage or older age, while others look relatively new. One can assume they are all going to be auctioned off eventually.

One can assume such an automotive dumping ground would never be found in the more affluent, gentrified parts of NYC. Yes, NYCHA owns this property, but it’s just steps away from apartment buildings full of people who probably don’t need a view of this blight right outside their windows.
