St. Mary's Tunnel 2009 - it's not a swamp, it's a cesspool
Author: Control , Date Posted: 2009-12-27 23:06:15It was time for a long overdue return to this abandoned rail line to properly cover what has turned out to be the city's failed clean up effort of the abandoned Port Morris tracks in the Bronx (aka 'The Bronx Swamp')
While the media seems content to throw the city administrators a lot of fluff pieces for cleaning up part of the line, we found that the tunnel under St. Marys Park is still full of water, and north of there - this former railroad right of way is still loaded with syringes, junkies and homeless camps.
The photos tell the story.
Homeless camp under one of the many overpasses.
Here we see the rare South Bronx Syringe Plant sprouting all over the place
North end of the tunnel - still looking fetid.
Inside the tunnel - still disgusting - inpassable due to syringe laden sewer trash water
Homeless camp
South end of the line - here we see where a former freight siding went into a building.
Very clean looking south end of tunnel, until you look into the edge of it and see it's still full of water blocked in by new rocks that prevent it from draining out.
1905. I'm sure the men who built this tunnel over 100 years ago would be disgusted to see what has come of it.
