SCH Chemical:
SCH Chemical is a building with a long, sorid history. It began it's life as a power plant for the Long Island Rail Road (yes, they spell it as two words) around the turn of the century (1900's, that is). McKim, Mead, and White are rumored to have been the the architects of this church like palace of abandonment. After it's life as a powerplant ended around the 1950s, it was emptied and more famously became a chemical plant. Today the building stands vacant. For a long while it was accessible, and what was to be found within was, to say the least, unusual.

More mysterious equipment cases.

Catwalks by the roof.

Grand old windows...

A view of the city...

Chimneys reach for the sky .

Super high ceiling levels compose the interior of this suprisingly empty building.

Long, empty gray cases could be found in large quanity, along with a marooned forklift circa 1970 or so. Other cases found on location originated at the Rome, NY AFB. These cases looked as though they could contain rockets or shoulder fired missiles. What was this, a terrorist storage facility? Or merely surplus mil equip bought cheap?

Old Gold Cigerettes. Eck.

Serious Ironwork.

...and there was this view. ironically, this was taken on a joint trip with Urbanlens, just 2 or 3 days before Sept. 11. it was the end of a long, fabulous summer. Everything was still bold and innocent. It seems like so long ago.

I tweaked the image to make the view from the window black and white, as most everyone thinks of B&W photography applying to the past... a past that will never be again.

This one's dedicated to all those who lost on that tuesday of september, and to all new yorkers, for pulling together and pulling through
