ASS: Assorted Subway Shenanigans
The NYC Subways are still ‘closed’ from 1-5AM, but trains are still running. Here’s an interesting look into this strange world of empty trains. So with homeless apparently still in the system at night, why are these trains not picking up paying customers? Customers who work odd shifts, and are often from minority households? You guessed it: Cuomo. Cuomo IS the virus that has put the city that never sleeps into an artificially induced, dare I say racist coma.

Shifting gears, the MTA will now start fining people who don’t wear masks on the subway and I am so here for this. ALWAYS make sure you’re wearing the proper ski mask when exploring NYC subway tunnels.

Absolutely horrible that this subway car cleaner died on the job. RIP.

That New Tunnel Smell
Alexandria, VA is getting started on that massive new drain tunnel project under Oldtown. With projects like this one, I rate it best to get in while construction is progressing.

Should Seattle replace a collapsing bridge with a new bridge (that might also collapse under unstable soil) or a new tunnel? Either will be exploring fun.

Maybe who cares and maybe not: While this isn’t a new tunnel, it is noteworthy that Belgium is looking to rename this tunnel. Also, Indiana has it’s first airport with a tunnel because who doesn’t like weird claims to fame?

Costs for the NY-NJ Gateway tunnel continue to rise and as I keep saying, we will never see this tunnel built until the original, 100+ year old tunnels collapse. The same goes for the LIRR East Side Access project, the timeline for which seems on the verge of being pushed out further.

TBM’s are nearly finished digging out Milan‘s new M4 transit tunnels.

ACAB & Co.
To the surprise of no one, one of the NYPD’s top cops is an accused rapist. Sure, the press outlets don’t want to use that word, but when you read the details of what this guy is repeatedly accused of (77 times!), it is a pretty damning trail.

Shorty’s Short Shorts
Two men were convicted of murder after dumping a dead body in a Detroit ‘bando. Aye you don’t need me to tell you that there are better ways of disposing of a body.

Some asshole property owner in Texas had two homeless people thrown in jail when they were caught ‘trespassing’ in his unused, apparently easy to access building. Fuck that property owner.

The USS United States—Philly’s big empty steam ship bando—has made an appearance in a music video.

What kind of sociopath builds a bunker like this one and then decorates it so ridiculously? Texas is way more weird than you might expect.

An explorer in Seattle fell down an elevator shaft and ALMOST DIED! (Can’t wait for the Youtube video).

Bando BBQ
The old Babcock mental hospital in Columbia, South Carolina burned to the ground last weekend. Also, firefighters in Columbus Ohio had to tame a blaze at an abandoned school building. This, of course, is why we can’t have nice bandos.

An old Kroger supermarket blazed up over the weekend in Youngstown Ohio.

Salt Lake City seems to have a ‘bando arsonist on their hands.

International Update
The week isn’t complete without one UK house with a secret tunnel.

And that’s a Wrap:
People are not fleeing NYC because of Crime. NYC’s response to, and frankly epic handing of the Covid-19 virus is nothing short of remarkable. We indeed flattened the curve. We overcame insane odds and limited a death toll that could have spread into the hundreds of thousands. That is the narrative that seems to be completely lost in our daily right wing media vomit factories. Instead, they’re hawking this fake news story about crime forcing people to flee. Dead cities, and all this other garbage scrawled on social media by people who have never even been to NYC, much less lived here in the past twenty years.

People are leaving NYC for more space. People are leaving NYC because the rents are insanely high, and home prices are still far north of reality. Who can spend $1M on a house in a decent NYC neighborhood when you can move to Atlanta, Saint Louis, Chicago or even LA and buy a whole ass, non-attached house at a fraction of the cost. It’s all about space now. A tiny ass one bedroom apartment in NYC might have been fine before Covid, but now it’s practically unworkable for married people who must work from home. And if there are kids involved, your situation is even harder. And bear in mind: this is coming from a guy who grew up in a tiny ass pre-war NYC tenement sharing a bedroom with two brothers. Back then, kids went to school, adults went to work… now with everyone in the same tiny ass space all day… that is far less than ideal. Who can blame anyone for escaping? And we’re not talking millionaires here: we’re talking normal working people who just plain need more space and can’t find/afford it in NYC at the moment.

Sure, there’s only one NYC. Yes, it is an amazing city that will never die. But for many people right now? The value just isn’t here. And it doesn’t look like it will be anytime in the next five to ten years. What we’re seeing is a market correction to NYC land owners insistence on overcharging for rent. They will do everything they can to maintain their real estate bubble. We’ll know in a few more months whether they got their way or not.
