2nd Ave Subway Station Construction
The NYC MTA is undertaking a massive
cash-tossproject to extend a subway tunnel under 2nd Avenue on the Upper East Side. This project was originally proposed in the 1920’s. A few small sections of it was built in the 70s, though nothing came of this project until the last 10 years. Today, actual construction is underway.

Winfield: Scunthole’s Lair 2012
The winfield is one of the largest stretches of ‘abandoned’ tunnel within the NYC subway system today, in a legion with the Harlem section of the Second Ave Subway, and The Suicide Tunnel. What sets the winfield apart though is that it was completed with a rare station shell that was tiled and prepped for use (all other station shells of this variety were never tiled or completed to full size – Think Underbelly). The only thing missing from this station and tunnel is a set of tracks and a destination for those tracks. The subway line is meant to serve was never actually built – leading the tunnel to an unceremonious dead end. Much of the station area today has been completely rebuilt to accommodate offices and crew locker rooms. The remaining section of the platform is now ‘scunts lair’, a dark place piled with miscellaneous electronic junk.

The Underbelly Project
Located in an abandoned section of NYC subway tunnel, the Underbelly project was a major art production with over 100 artists involved. Here is a rare glimpse into this gallery of grand art. -

Second Avenue Subway, 1970s Harlem Segment
When we arrived at this tunnel, it had never been photographed before. Only a few daredevil graffiti artists even knew it existed, and everyone was tight lipped about how to get in. Make no mistake – getting in was a challenge, but we don’t do this because it’s always easy.

F’ing mirror image.
Sometimes subway stations are only, at best, half in use. There’s many many many stations with abandoned mezzanines and closed off entrances. This is one of them. -

2nd System Blues
What we’ve got here is a short section of 4 track station. Untiled, unused and never finished, it was built in anticipation of an IND ‘Second System’ subway line running through here. The second system sadly never came to be, and this space sits unused yet relatively clean and well lit.

This long abandoned area seems to have once been used by workers to slack off while on the job… you don’t see a lot of nooks like this anymore -
