Metro North Graveyard, 2002

In 2002 we stopped by Metro North's graveyard to poke around the oddball collection of junk commuter train equipment stored and awaiting a date with either the scrappers torch or, less likely, resale and restoration. This collection of locomotives and rail cars represented some of the best and worst in terms of reliability & design.

The Octagon, Roosevelt Island – 2005 reconstruction

We make our way around and find an entrance right by a security trailer. This security trailer... it bugs me out a bit. I can't tell if anyone is in it, but I know someone's in this building we're heading for. You can just sorta feel that sort of thing sometimes. You can almost smell it...

The Octagon, Roosevelt Island – 2002 – Abandoned Remains

The octagon was NYC's first mental health hospital. It was closed in the 1970s and was set on fire multiple times. The wings of the building were knocked down, leaving only 'the octagon' shaped building that was previously the main entrance.

It's a warm summer night and we're waiting, lurking in the dark along the shore of Roosevelt Island. Tonight we've got a crew 6 deep with a single target: the old Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island. One of dozens of NYC area hospitals to have ended up on our abandoned hit list.
