All Things Exploring. 2019.08.15

Here we are with issue 2 of what might be a weekly journal/newsletter of exploring related news and stuff…

Trespassing on Trump
Here in NYC, some well know explorers got pinched for doing a Trump branded rooftop.

As the Post reports: “It was unclear how the group managed to get onto the roof, but the NYPD said that “signs are clearly posted saying authorized access only.”  This reporter clearly has no clue how bad security is especially when you hire at minimum wage and probably don’t pay them on time.
Donald Trump is a combined sewer overflow during a hurricane, who should choke to death on some rat dung but that’s entirely besides the point. Hopefully the Trump World Five at least got some good shots. If they have to have a fundraiser to cover legal fees, I’ll happily attend and/or give my TED talk on not getting caught upon request.

Also in NYC News:
The NYPD  has finally grown a brain stem and started tracking white supremacist terrorists.

This is very relevant to exploring, because not all that long ago they believed explorers were terrorists, and before that, they thought PHOTOGRAPHERS were terrorists—something we actual lead the charge against back in the day. At least now they are finally looking at actual terrorists. Maybe they’ll look in the mirror someday BUT HEY NOW…

Over in Brexitland
The UK press seems to love urban exploring stories. Stuff that we all do in the states that never raises an eyebrow is a big news trend thing over there in the land of the blithering Boris Johnson. This one is rather basic, but representative of the genre…

Also in Brexitland, Ed Sheehan bought up a few houses and is apparently going to connect them all with tunnels. What’s up with that? People who use tunnels are hiding from something THIS MEANS YOU!

Going Global
Did you know the Japanese started building a massive underground complex during WW2 while awaiting a US land invasion? This complex is available for tours.

Ironically, it is not entirely unlike some of the large abandoned military bases I recently explored on Hawai’i.  The US started construction on several new coastal defenses, and these projects stopped once the war was over, and are now available for your maybe not legal touring excitement upon your arrival on Oahu.

If you want to pay money to stay overnight in a Canadian jail, there is an AirBNB for that

If you want to stay in one for free, I could tell you about a good one but this isn’t signal or wicker or telegram and wait a minute who are you and where is that envelope full of cash?

All The Rest
Summer is starting it’s slow grind down into the yellow dirt of winter and I’m not liking it. There are so many things left that need doing in this amazing weather. Endless days of getting into spots, nights of partying on maybe illegal boats, running into sassy ass explorer ex’s you haven’t seen in years, then bouncing out to hit another bando… None of this should ever end.

Yours in rust dirt and lust,

-B G J

NOTE: It sometimes takes a short while for comments to be approved - unfortunately there's a lot of spam comments that come in. I absolutely love when y'all share personal stories of friends relatives etc who worked in these places. It really helps capture what these places were like before they closed up shop.

If you're feeling salty, argumentative comments completely devoid of facts (supply links to support your argument) will not be published. Got a case to state? come with the details.

Did an NYPD bird spot them? — Not easy these days to get up on Manhattan rooftops —

  2. Bad Guy Joe says:

I’m guessing it was security cameras at or around the roof itself.

    Bad Guy Joe
Bad Guy Joe knows more about the NYC underground than anyone else on or below the surface of this planet. He has spent nearly 30 years sneaking into NYC's more forbidden locations. When not underground, he's probably bitching about politicians or building something digital.
