Since today marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of Grand Central Terminal, I thought it might be nice to take you to a part of the station that is rarely seen by the public at large: Inside the massive clock overlooking 42nd street and Park Avenue South. This is the largest Tiffany clock in the world. Measuring 14 feet in diameter and constructed of stained glass, It is a priceless one of a kind gem.

The abandoned Mt. Morris Station

On a recent trip to Rochester, NY, we stopped in at Mt. Morris. DevB had a lead on there being an abandoned railroad station in town, so who was I to argue?

The 11th Street Print Shop, another abandoned factory.
This three floor abandoned factory building dated back to the 1950s. It’s typical modernist styled exterior made it a rather plain looking addition to a neighborhood full of similar abandoned factory buildings. Over the years it served many companies, before being bought in 2011 for 5 million dollars. That’s a lot of cash for stout factory with no expansion possibilities, so demolition to make way for yet another condo building was definitely coming next.

Hudson River Psych 2012 – Recreation Center
The Herman B. Snow Rehabilitation Center was the most modern on the Hudson River Psych Center campus. Built in 1971, it was located right along the old railroad right of way that most explorers used to access the hospital grounds, it was also the most accessible. This accessibility made it a prime target for vandals. This entire page is dedicated to much of the graffiti found here in 2012.

‘Queensway’ – So much for democracy?
Here is a story that will frustrate anyone who has ever been tasked with trying to get to JFK airport from anywhere in NYC. Instead of reusing a branch of the LIRR which was shut down back in the 1962 (when LIRR was the red-headed stepchild of the Pennsylvania railroad – which looted its cash), the current governor of New York is backing a plan to convert the tracks into a park.

The Glenwood power plant has long been a favorite place for us to visit. Abandoned since the 1960s, these massive buildings have deteriorated significantly over the decades.

Freight Rail ‘detour’ in Queens: A Bad Idea.
Over the last few years a group of NIMBYS in central Queens have been basically advocating for the eradication of rail freight through Queens. The people behind this campaign seem to live close to Fresh Pond Yard (which has been a rail yard since at least 1906). After years of freight rail decline and the lost of the large ‘Yard A’ classification yard in L.I.C. (which will become a passenger rail yard in support of the ESA project) the LIRR outsourced its freight operations to a small startup railroad (New York & Atlantic) which has aggressively and successfully marketed its services. The growth of their business has made Fresh Pond yard busier than it has been in the last 20 years.
