While discussing a recent buzzfeed post about ‘33 beautiful abandoned places‘, and one from IO9.com covering ‘majestic abandoned power stations‘, we joked that if someone made a similar post about NYC, it would need to have a different, more disturbing theme. I then smacked myself in the forehead and realized I absolutely had to do this, immediately.

98 years ago today, a subway tunneling accident made Richard Creedon an NYC Legend.
Today marks the 98th anniversary of one of the most unique events in NYC Subway Tunnel history. On this day in 1905, a man was accidentally shot like a canon out of the present day 4/5 line subway tunnel under NY Harbor and into the air. He survived. -

The Night that LTV Saved Greenpoint.
Ok, so the title is a little dramatic, but it’s not too far off from reality. Were it not for our nocturnal exploring activities, a major fire could have destroyed a fuel storage facility and other vital infrastructure. First responders could have been seriously injured or worse.

LIC’s Wheelspur Yard / Poultry Market – Past, Present & Future
On the north shore of Newtown creek lays a plot of land with a strangely unique history – a place that was once the Wheelspur Yard, a passenger yard for LIRR trains. After, it became a poultry market and later an office for small businesses and other food distributors. All of these are gone now, and soon this land will become a rail yard once again. In a city where real estate is at a premium – such a full circle transformation is unheard of – especially in an area such as L.I.C. – where the city’s industrial past has rapidly been whitewashed to make way for high priced housing. Mix in the drama of flooding and fire caused by Hurricane Sandy, and you’ve got a unique New York story.
