Exploring the NYC Subway System

The NYC Subway system is one of the most extensive on the planet. Originally built by three separate, for-profit companies, this transit system has gone through constant evolution over the past 120+ years. Long periods of growth ended during the financial crisis’s of the 1970s, leading to a dark era where passageways, exits and even bathrooms were all closed due to criminal activity. In more recent times, new tunnels have been added, extending routes to ‘transit desert’ neighborhoods.

Given the unique nature of how it was built, and what it has been through, the NYC subway system is heavily peppered with hidden spaces, never-built provisions, and abandoned stations. The articles below visually highlight many such spaces, while keeping them nameless and shrouded in a bit of mystery.
