All the news that’s fit to twist. Volume 1, Issue 1.

Ok kids welcome to the very unexpected first issue of what may or may not your new favorite monthly/weekly publication on all things exploring and exploring related. A look behind the curtain, if you will…

We’re going to start off with exploring related stuff in the news this week. These posts will grow change and evolve from here. What do you want to see? Comment below…

IN THE NEWS:
https://untappedcities.com/2019/08/06/old-kosciuszco-bridge-becomes-artificial-reef-off-fire-island-long-island/
Mr Subways, Andrew Cuomo, apparently decided to use some debris from the old K bridge to aid in the creation of an artificial reef off Long Island. It’s not unrealistic to conclude that this ironwork was so badly rotted from lack of maintenance that it couldn’t be recycled. Numerous artificial reefs along the east coast were created out of old subway cars. That practice ended ten years ago. Will see see any rail cars reefed again anytime soon? I’d say not very likely.

The MTA is going to do some shit to the the cross town shuttle. As all you NUMTOTS already know, the 42nd street shuttle was part of the original IRT subway from City Hall to 145th street. These tracks haven’t seen much change since the ‘H system’ was opened and the shuttle came into existence. The new shuttle will feature better platforms and longer trains, though it will also eliminate the small bridge over the tracks at Times Square, which is the only spot in the system you can legally be right next to an active tunnel away from the platform and watch 1,2 & 3 trains go by.

Another question I have is: will they remove the mid tunnel stairs that used to run from the Shuttle to the 7 train tunnel below?

Also of note here is there will be a new pedestrian tunnel from 5th ave to Times Square – creating a disjointed path whereby one can walk from 5th to 8th avenues underground. This will be the longest legal east-west foot path under Manhattan when it opens.

To the surprise of no one, Elon Musk, aside from having some terrible transit ideas (a car traveling through a tube is not mass transit), is also a photo stealing twerp. Fuck Elon Musk.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2019-08-05/neighborhood-battle-over-emoji-house-manhattan-beach
No one likes a snitch: this Airbnb owner decided to troll her neighbors by painting her house pink and adding emojis, bringing new meaning to the idea of ‘spite houses’. This of course has nothing to do with exploring but it’s fucken’ hilarious.

OTHER THINGS:
In Queens, It’s a good weekend when you evade security twice on two separate nights, due entirely to their ineptitude. On Staten Island, it’s a great weekend when you end the day with some salty sailor yelling at you to get off his abandoned junk heap of boats. Fuck that guy – he should have cast off into the water if he wanted privacy with his dead hooker. And legally speaking, bitch, if there is no ‘no trespassing’ sign, there is no crime.

AND THAT’S ALL FOLKS

Comments

NOTE: It sometimes takes a short while for comments to be approved - unfortunately there's a lot of spam comments that come in. I absolutely love when y'all share personal stories of friends relatives etc who worked in these places. It really helps capture what these places were like before they closed up shop.

If you're feeling salty, argumentative comments completely devoid of facts (supply links to support your argument) will not be published. Got a case to state? come with the details.
