It was a dull Monday afternoon in February of 2016, until I saw perhaps one of the rarest freight moves in NYC. An NY&A crew rounding up rock cars from Maspeth yard, using P&W’s power.
For whatever reason I almost never came across this specific job, despite driving by here often at all hours of the day and night—let along with P&W power.
I had barely any time to turn around, find a spot, and get some shots. They left quickly with all the empties. Being a Monday afternoon, the train was probably brought ‘upstairs’, to Fremont, tied to any other outbounds and sent back to CT within a few hours.
It was also February. These rock trains usually only run in the warm months, but just a few days over 40 degrees seems warm enough for the rock mining & construction industries.
I’ve only seen NY&A switch this customer once or twice before, always with the usual NY&A owned & leased locomotives.
