The fall of 5ptz last neighbors

Published on: May 13th, 2019 | Written by:

Davis street in LIC is one of the many short, dead end streets that until recently, time forgot.

Located under the 7 train, Davis street is a rather dank, insalubrious street. Hearing protection should be a requirement to walk this street, as the subway above runs frequently and screeches around a set of curves at either end of the block. Leading nowhere and perpetually dirty, it is anything but inviting.

The block is best known as the former home of 5ptz. The courtyard where so many parties were held was accessible only from Davis street. On the north side of the block, a series of one and two floor warehouses added to the general drabness of the street. These warehouses were rather ideally located, given the noisy nature of some of the work that took place in them.

Located among these businesses was “Peter Cosola Inc” a contractor who rented out the last building on the block (45-57 Davis street), right up against the LIRR tracks. Cosola seemed seemed to perform a variety of construction work, mostly renovations and HVAC work. Judging from what we found in the building, the renovation work entailed a lot of custom cabinet building & woodwork.

At the moment I’m not entirely sure what became of this company. They vacated the building, which was left with its doors flapping unlocked in the wind, during the winter of 2017-2018. A significant amount of material was left behind, including computers in the offices upstairs.

A residential future

The building itself was soon demolished. Turns out that it will be replaced by a new, ugly residential building. The rendering of this building (seen below) completely omits the subway. Either this rendering is of the wrong building (it looks as if it is located on Jackson Avenue, a block away) or the developers are in denial. One can only wonder if they’ll omit installing any serious soundproofing on this building as well.

Above: Interior photos from the office space.

Questionable rendering, likely for the wrong address.

NOTE: It sometimes takes a short while for comments to be approved - unfortunately there's a lot of spam comments that come in. I absolutely love when y'all share personal stories of friends relatives etc who worked in these places. It really helps capture what these places were like before they closed up shop.

If you're feeling salty, argumentative comments completely devoid of facts (supply links to support your argument) will not be published. Got a case to state? come with the details.
